October 22, 2026
Last November, the Falls Church News-Press told readers what New Year's Eve would look like downtown: "There will be no street closures as has been the case there every year since the mid-1990s."
By early October 2026, the City's Watch Night page opens with a different sentence: "Watch Night returns to downtown Falls Church with an expanded celebration."
What happened in between shaped this whole holiday season. It also accounts for the new event on the calendar, a car-free holiday market on Little Falls Street that City staff openly call a pilot.
The 2025 change came with little warning. The News-Press reported that City officials gave no official reason, and that some area restaurateurs said they had not been consulted or offered options. According to Falls Church Pulse, the City cut its support for the December 31, 2025 event on short notice, and the much smaller celebration hurt restaurant sales.
Restaurant owners then went to the City to ask for better communication, and the two sides began meeting in January. The most visible result is Little City Sips. These events create a temporary designated outdoor refreshment area downtown, so adults can carry a drink from participating restaurants as they walk between shops and live music.
The numbers from the first Sips explain why the City kept going. Pulse reports that the June 13, 2026 pilot drew more than 4,000 people and boosted restaurant sales. The Economic Development Authority's contribution was $5,000 for cups. A second Sips followed on August 22, and a third took place on October 17.
Watch Night 2026 includes a New Year's Eve edition of Sips. The City says participating restaurants, featured drinks and the Sips map will be posted closer to December.
Pulse reports that the idea for the Little City Holiday Market came from Mayor Letty Hardi after a holiday trip to Germany last year, and that she suggested pairing it with a Sips evening. The City's Economic Development Office planned the event for Saturday, December 12. The market runs 3 to 9 p.m. and Sips runs 5 to 10 p.m.
The demand from vendors was larger than the space. Staff first planned for 30 to 50 retail vendors on the block of Little Falls Street between Broad Street and Park Avenue. At the EDA's October 7 meeting, staff reported that 80 vendors had reached out and 40 had committed. The block holds about 40, and local businesses get preference.
The plan was debated before it was settled. At the EDA's September 1 meeting, owners from Clare and Don's Beach Shack and Ireland's Four Provinces said restaurants that had helped build Sips were not consulted about the change. They raised a concern that a market focused on Little Falls Street would draw crowds away from eateries elsewhere in the Sips area, which is bounded by W. Broad Street, Park Avenue, Little Falls Street and N. Washington Street. EDA Chair Ross Litkenhous told the board that the EDA had wanted to expand the holiday market at Winter Wonderland, "but couldn't pull that off. The next logical location is Little Falls."
By October, the plan had grown beyond one block. Pulse reports that Clare and Don's, Ireland's Four Provinces and Northside Social agreed to open their outdoor patios to retail vendors or activities that evening. Mayor Hardi said Mr. Brown's Park will also have activities, which brings the market to Broad Street. On Little Falls Street itself, Pulse notes that Stratford Garden had been the only restaurant open during the planned hours until Little City Café began staying open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. City staff describe the evening as a pilot that they and the EDA plan to learn from and adjust.
The market page says the street will be car-free and admission is free. Its vendor list leans heavily local:
The live music lineup will be announced.
The Cheese Cartel is one of the newer names on that list. It held its ribbon-cutting at 922 W. Broad St. in Founders Row this past April, according to the Falls Church Independent.
The new market adds to the holiday calendar without replacing anything. The City's Holiday Gift & Craft Show still runs the weekend before at the Community Center, organized by the Recreation and Parks Department. Winter Wonderland shows how these events change over time. The News-Press traced it back to a tree-lighting ceremony for the lights along W. Broad Street. It later moved to Founders Row and added entertainment.

A Very Victorian Christmas is put on by the Friends of Cherry Hill with the Victorian Society of Falls Church. It includes period decorations, music, holiday stories and children's activities. The Winter Wonderland program features performances by Creative Cauldron and the Meridian High School Choral Group, Santa's arrival by firetruck with photos, Polar Express train rides, stilt-walking nutcrackers, hot chocolate and cookies. According to the City's calendar, the Gift & Craft Show has more than 40 crafters and holiday vendors and free raffles both days. The Saturday-only Children's Holiday Shoppe sells gifts for $6 or less and wraps them for free.
The Founders Row website still shows last year's Winter Wonderland date. The 2026 event is Tuesday, December 1, as listed on Visit Falls Church.
The City describes the 2026 version as expanded. West Broad Street will be closed to traffic between North Maple Avenue and South Washington Street. The plan includes outdoor tents, fire pits, live bands, a DJ, bounce houses, gaming trucks, light-up features and warming stations, and the evening ends with the star drop at midnight.
A free shuttle will connect East Falls Church Metro, the celebration and other stops in the city. Free parking is available at the George Mason Square, Broad & Washington and Kaiser Permanente garages, on the street and in the City Hall lot. The City is also looking for local business and organization sponsors, and says the entertainment lineup and participating restaurants are still to come.
The New Year's Eve Sips edition is scheduled for Thursday, December 31, from 5 p.m. to midnight, two hours before Watch Night itself begins.
