What's New To Eat And Do Around Arlington This August

For years, the pattern in Arlington was predictable. A restaurant would open in the District, build a following, and eventually get around to a second location out here. Sometimes it took a decade. Sometimes it never happened at all, and you drove into DC or up to Bethesda for the thing everyone was talking about.

That pattern is breaking. The openings landing in Ballston, Rosslyn, and National Landing this summer are not sequels. They are first Virginia locations, first outside-DC locations, and in a couple of cases first US locations. Add the 50th Arlington County Fair on the back half of the month and August starts to look less like a placeholder and more like the busiest stretch of the year.

Ballston Is Now A Bagel Neighborhood

The most Arlington-specific opening of the summer is Bagel Uprising, which opened its second shop on North Randolph Street on July 28, four years after owner Chad Breckinridge began selling boiled-and-baked small-batch bagels at the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market before opening the first shop in Del Ray in 2019. The Ballston location adds house-made babka and hash browns to the menu. Breckinridge has been explicit that this is not a chain store, but a second shop aimed at becoming part of the Ballston community.

A few blocks away, on the Ballston-Virginia Square line at 3901 Fairfax Drive, a French-inspired bistro opened June 26 with a raw bar, Kaluga caviar, lobster pasta, duck au poivre, and steak frites. It is one of the few places in the immediate Metro corridor doing a full raw program at that price point.

Down in National Landing, DC-based Duke's Grocery began serving in Water Park on July 1 in its first Virginia location, with menu items specific to the location alongside the signature Proper Burger of angus, gouda and red onions. If you have been following the burger conversation in the DMV, you know Duke's has been near the top of it for the better part of a decade. The Crystal Drive spot at 1621 finally puts it inside walking distance of anyone living around Metropolitan Park.

The Rosslyn Food Hall Is Doing Something New

Upside on Moore has taken longer than expected to feel like a real destination. That is changing. The Sweet District opened June 24 at the Upside on Moore food hall in Rosslyn, from the team behind Frost and Flourish and Just Ron Chocolate, combining their expertise to make cinnamon rolls, carrot cake and Filipino halo halo. Between that kiosk and the earlier Maman location in Rosslyn, the two-block stretch around 1700 N. Moore now has a legitimate weekend breakfast case that did not exist a year ago.

The interesting shift is not that new restaurants are opening. It is which restaurants. When Bagel Uprising picks Ballston as its second-ever location, and Duke's picks Water Park for its first Virginia store, those are votes on where the daily foot traffic is.

Clarendon's Wilson Boulevard Keeps Rewriting Itself

The old Wilson Hardware space at 2915 Wilson Boulevard has been converted into a multi-level dining and nightlife destination, with The Boulevard serving a globally influenced American menu including sushi rolls, crudos, steak frites, beetroot risotto and king mushroom cavatelli, and upstairs Solset bringing a more lounge-driven feel with Mediterranean-inspired design, tropical cocktails, bao buns, and rooftop seating beneath a retractable awning.

A block west at 3101 Wilson, a South Korean bakery cafe brings a lineup of pastries, cream cakes and specialty breads with glass cases of fruit-topped cakes, custard buns, croissants, mochi doughnuts, and savory pastries alongside sandwiches and salads for lunch. Between the two, the walk from Clarendon Metro to Whole Foods now passes three storefronts that did not exist last summer.

Looking further out, Charlottesville-based Three Notch'd Brewing Company is expected to open its first Northern Virginia location in Clarendon in the second half of 2026, targeting the ground floor of the Barnes and Noble space at 2800 Clarendon Boulevard at The Crossing Clarendon. And Reston's Tiki Thai is coming to the ground floor of the Reva apartment building at 244 19th Court S in Crystal City, expected to open this fall.

The 50th County Fair Is The Weekend To Plan Around

If you only pick one thing on the August calendar, this is it. The Arlington County Fair runs August 12 through 16 at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center at 3501 2nd St S, celebrating 50 years with rides, games, entertainment and food for all ages.

A few things worth knowing about this year specifically:

• The scale is legitimately large. It is one of the largest free events on the East Coast, transforming the Thomas Jefferson Community and Fitness Center for one week in mid-August with live outdoor music, carnival rides and food vendors, and has been running for 50 years, attracting some 80,000 people annually.
• Anvara's sponsor materials put attendance higher, at 150,000-plus people across five days in August. Either way, plan for parking to be difficult and use the shuttle.
• The Extension Master Gardeners run a booth judging competitive exhibits for fruits, nuts, herbs, vegetables, flowers, potted plants and flower arrangements, open to residents of Arlington County, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, the City of Alexandria, and the City of Falls Church, and students who attend schools in Arlington County, the City of Alexandria and the City of Falls Church. If your tomato plants got away from you this year, that is a real entry option.

The fair straddles the Ballston and Columbia Pike neighborhoods, which is worth noting if you are trying to combine a fair evening with dinner. Walk east into Ballston for the new bagel and Korean bakery. Walk south on Columbia Pike for the older spots that have been holding the corridor down for years.

The weekends around the fair fill in with smaller, easier plans:

• Lubber Run Amphitheater and Arlington Arts summer performances continue with The Pirog Brothers on August 1 and STEMusic on August 2. Free, outdoor, tucked two blocks off Route 50.
• Westover Beer Garden hosts live music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 4SU returns to the Westover Beer Garden on Friday July 31 at 6 p.m.
• Rosslyn LIVE runs the second Thursday of August, 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Gateway Park with live music, food trucks and outdoor gathering space.
• Hello Kitty Cafe Truck East makes a DC-area appearance at Westpost at National Landing on Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. Bring a kid or a nostalgic friend.
• Looking ahead by a few weeks, Rosslyn Jazz Fest 2026 is Saturday, September 12 from 1 p.m. at Gateway Park. Circle it now.

What This Means For The Neighborhood

Two years ago, if a friend asked what was worth walking to in Arlington on a weeknight, the honest answer was a short list of long-standing places plus whatever had recently opened in Clarendon. The list is longer now, and it is denser near the Metro line. The Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and National Landing are pulling first Virginia openings the way Mosaic District and Reston Town Center have been for a decade. That is a real change in the food geography of Northern Virginia, and it is happening on the streets you already walk.

For homeowners who have been here a while, the practical takeaway is smaller and more useful than any market chart. The neighborhood you bought into is not the neighborhood you have today. It has more places to eat within a ten-minute walk, more live music on the free-and-outdoor calendar, and one enormous free fair on its 50th run in the middle of the month.
